CHGM takes Carol Schwartz for a “Walk in Our Shoes”

Capitol Hill Group Ministry was excited to co-lead Mayoral Candidate, Carol Schwartz, in The Way Home Campaign’s new “A Walk In Our Shoes” activity, on September 12th.The Way Home Campaign seeks to end chronic homelessness by 2017, and with 1,785 chronically homeless individuals in DC, we have a lot of work to do. As a campaign partner, CHGM played a large role in creating “A Walk In Our Shoes,” an experiential learning activity designed to enable participants to learn about homelessness directly from those who have been or are currently unhoused.

Led by CHGM’s Whitney Parnell and colleagues from Miriam’s Kitchen, Ms. Schwartz took an early morning walk from a park bench to a soup kitchen,  similar to the route many homeless neighbors follow every day. Along the way, local homeless neighbors spoke to Ms. Schwartz about the daily challenges they experience as a result of being homeless. She then shared a meal with homeless individuals in the Miriam’s Kitchen dining room and heard from a formerly homeless individual about the transformative experience of becoming housed after many years of living on the streets.

We hope that Ms. Schwartz is the first of many city leaders to participate in A Walk In Our Shoes. We believe the activity will engender in participating leaders a new level of compassion for homeless DC residents and the trials they face, greater motivation to end chronic homelessness, and confidence that it can be done by 2017.
