Welcome to Shirley’s Place
a daytime hospitality center for homeless families

Rejoice!
Shirley's Place Opens Its
Doors
Many members of
the community, friends, donors, CHGM staff and program participants
celebrated the Grand Opening of Shirley's Place on March 4, 2007. The
newly renovated Day Hospitality Center was renamed Shirley's Place for
the late Shirley Smith Anderson, a long-time Capitol
Hill resident and social justice activist. The center, in the shadow of
the U.S. Capitol, will provide a safe, healthy environment for people
who are homeless and provide opportunities to achieve
self-sufficiency. For the full story, click here.
“If we find a way to reach each other, we will find heart and joy in
it, and we will find quiet. If we pull together we will endure.”
--Shirley
Smith Anderson – September 12, 2000
Since 1996, Capitol
Hill Group Ministry has provided emergency shelter for families in the
District of Columbia. Churches provide overnight shelter, and this
house – Shirley’s Place – offers a daytime home base for them. In the
shadow of the US Capitol, Shirley’s Place is open seven days a week,
365 days a year.
Shirley's Place
Offers...
A Place to Be a Family
Being together in a safe environment, families can share their
challenges and successes with others who will listen and understand.
They can laugh a little and love a lot!
A Place to Rest
Families find refuge from rain, snow and summer heat. Infants and
toddlers can nap. There are comfortable chairs for respite and
reflection.
A Place to Be Safe
and Feel Welcome
The only drop-in center in D.C. for families with children of all ages.
It’s
an address for those who don’t have one, with telephone service,
lavatory and laundry facilities. All are welcome—and for some, it is
the only place where they can say, “I belong.”
A Place to Learn and Grow
Experienced staff provides case management to encourage steps toward
independent living. Families participate in life skill building
workshops, such as money management and child development. Computers
